Dearly departed

Image
This one is a stretch for today, but according to my favorite holiday website, on this day in 1961 Willie Mays became only the fourth MLB player to hit three or more home runs in a season.  Besides, I never need an excuse to wear my baseball skin bow. Every time I think of our dearly departed friend Willie Mays I get the giggles, because Charlie Brown was a big fan of Mr. Mays.  One day that got him into trouble at school.  LOL, I love the look on his face when he spells the word! Poor ol' Charlie Brown ended up having to go to the office over that. If Chuck's principal was anything like mine he probably gave him a stern talking-to and sent him back to class.  My principals weren't the paddle-happiest in the world, though they would do it if it needed to be done.  Or they would in grade school.  By the time I got to high school and desperately NEEDED a paddling they didn't do it.  Hell, I even asked them why they couldn't just paddle me and send me back to class (I

Mods!

Don't worry, I'm not going to start rambling about music again (Mods and Rockers and all that).  It's International Body Piercing Day! Actually, now that I think of it none of my piercings bled...take that back.  My lower lip did, but only because I sucked on it.  Don't do that to a fresh lip piercing, kids.  It's really dumb.  Anyway, my father was uber-conservative about the way my sister and I looked, and he was 100% against body piercings, even to the point of having more than one piercing in our ears.  After he died, though...oh, Mama lifted that ban in a heartbeat.  Imagine my shock when my sister came traipsing into my college dorm room sporting both a nose piercing AND a navel piercing!  Daddy would've had a stroke, LOL.  Both Mama and Sister admitted that getting both done at the same time was a huge mistake; one piercing tends to send the body into a type of shock due to...well, due to tissue damage and pain.  The body doesn't like that!  But Siste

Today is a more serious one, PTSD Awareness Day.  The awareness color is teal, but this is as close as I could get. As I've established in the past my maternal grandfather fought in WWII and saw things he'd never forget.  Understandably he came back from the war a little shell-shocked, though not anywhere near as badly as some folks.  He did admit that fresh out of the war he wasn't well, and had it not been for Grandma his life might not have gone as positive as it did.  Nonetheless Grandpa lived well and functioned, but he was afraid of fireworks and sudden noises for the rest of his life.  Like all men who worked behind enemy lines he saw plenty of horrible things, and those things tended to haunt him as well.  He had comrades who came back from the war way worse off than he was, but if asked he'd be the first one to admit that he had a little "shell-shock," the term for PTSD back then. Of course one doesn't have to experience a war to have post-traumat

Random day!

Image
Hip-hip-hooray, it's a random day!  For this random day I choose...one that is very bizarre.  Etsy shop is the one and only MoFunAccessories . Seriously, I think that's the only Etsy shop that offers dismembered doll heads as jewelry or accessories.  I own one like this already, and Monique says she's still looking for another that she lost.  LOL, I like Monique!  She admitted to me in a message that her work area looked like a tornado hit it, and as a result she lost the clip I wanted.  So I picked something else and was quite happy.  This isn't that one, but I like it just the same. As for the doll, that looks a lot like a Barbie clone that I bought long ago.  I named her Kate Kite , a play on " Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! "  Mine is a redhead. These heads come off easily, and the bodies are crap quality so I think Monique was on the right track using the head for a hair clip.  But she can't have Kate.  Despite her body being crap quality I like h

Can't buy me love

Fitting for an ace, LOL.  Apparently it's Global Beatles Day.  Like I said last Friday, everyone seems to love the Beatles. No, still haven't found a bow devoted to the Who, and that wouldn't have worked today anyway.  I like the Who.  I like the Beatles.  But they're about as different as two British rock bands can be!  Either way it's Global Beatles Day, and while they're not my all-time favorite band I can definitely live with that.  My family had wildly varying tastes in music, but we all liked the Beatles to some extent.  Mama likes Ringo the best.  I like George.  Daddy liked Paul, because they both played bass and had the same name.  NONE of us like John much.  His voice is too whiny and he himself was a mega-hypocrite.  But all four of 'em together?  Not quite genius, but darn close. Beatles fans, what's your favorite song???  I'm not gonna rehash that bit since I did it once, LOL. Rockin' love, RagingMoon1987

Sing a happy song...or not

Image
Global Smurfs Day.  That can only mean a blue bow. I'm not a big fan of the Smurfs.  They're too damn cutesy for my taste, and they're kinda dim-witted too.  That said, I did watch a few episodes in my day and I got acquainted with...well, with some of 'em.  Given my fondness for Oscar the Grouch, it should be no surprise that Grouchy Smurf was a favorite of mine.  He was...well, a grouch!  He was eternally in a bad mood, and he said "I hate" a lot.  I think he'd have made good friends with Oscar the Grouch and with Tardar Sauce. It turns out that Grouchy was bitten by a fly long ago and that altered his personality significantly (if one goes by the comics, at least).  He does have a soft spot, admitting his fondness for Smurfette and for Baby Smurf.  Both characters reciprocate Grouchy's positive feelings, and that led to a comical misunderstanding on my part.  My five-year-old self was watching an episode of the 1981 animated series, and...I don'

Raised by boomers

Image
Today is Baby Boomers Recognition Day.  Being raised by baby boomers means getting to hear the good stuff on the radio growing up.  Yep, both Mama and Daddy were/are baby boomers, and they were a bit older when they had my sister and me so we were raised a little on the strict side.  Not that there was no love, of course.  Far from it!  Mama and Daddy were just extra-protective, and when I grew into a smart-a$$, know-it-all teenager I felt kinda stifled.  It was all for the best, though; I had no idea that the boy I had a wild crush on was into drugs, and Mama did.  And on a positive note I got tips from both parents on how to dress with a retro edge (which I loved to do in high school).  I wore my hair long and my jeans shabby, with necklaces piled on and earrings to my shoulders.  Some of the other kids probably made fun of me behind my back, but as long as I didn't catch wind of it all was good. Oh yes, and the music.  I think I've said before that my dad was a hard rocker a

Hot, hot heat

Time to batten down the hatches!  Summer is here, and it's an El Nino summer!  Last summer was horrendous, but since El Nino is hanging around I figure this summer will REALLY be a bitch.  Anyway, summer for me means lemonade...heck, anytime means lemonade.  Etsy shop is the defunct AdoraBowsStore. Not much to say today.  I'm in significant pain due to arthritis, and that's left me depressed, but other than that, nothing. Love, RagingMoon1987

A type of pride I can support

Image
It's Autistic Pride Day, and while I'm not diagnosed as being on the spectrum, I have friends who are.  Etsy shop is fittingly named bowsforthebelle . Not much to say today that I haven't said in the past!  I am considering having myself tested for Asperger's because several friends tell me that I've got symptoms, but other than that, nothing. Love, RagingMoon1987

Blue's Clues

Image
According to multiple sources, the titular Blue has a birthday today.  Etsy shop is JoyJoeyKangaroo . I was WAAAAY too old for Blue's Clues when it started airing, but I loved and still love the innocence of it.  Basically you had Steve, a dopey young man who owned Blue, a not-so-dopey blue dog.  Blue would want something done, and she'd make Steve (and the viewing audience) guess what it was by marking clues with her pawprints.  Each show incorporated three clues and featured a number of side routines like receiving the mail and helping a friend out with some task.  For the most part it was just simple crap; Blue wanted a special story read for her naptime, or snow was falling and Blue wanted to do something particular, or Steve had a cold and Blue knew something special that would help him recover.  I loved it...except that in the beginning Nick Jr would show the same episode all week.  I'm pretty sure I understand why; there was probably a limited number of episodes fil

Flag Day comes again

Image
My dad's glory days always ran from June 14th to July 4th. Nothing new today.  It's been kinda a difficult week for me; I've slept poorly and my arthritis has been acting up.  I did, however, hear the season's first firecrackers...on the evening of the eleventh.  I didn't think folks were supposed to be messing and gomming with fireworks until today.  But then if that's the case then why on Earth did I see fireworks for sale at Wal-Mart during Memorial Day weekend???  I don't know who's weirder, Wal-Mart or the folks who buy from there (I'm lumping myself into that second category). Happy Flag Day, RagingMoon1987

Cicada pride!

Image
It's summer, unofficially.  It's Pride Month.  It's cicada season.  Cicada season means that my silk cicada clip is making a reappearance .  Etsy shop is TarnavskayaStudio . Yeah, June is Pride Month.  While I am on the rainbow spectrum I usually avoid taking part in pride events for reasons that I discussed last October.  That said, there is a pride event that I can get behind 100%...and it ain't asexual pride.  This shirt came from DeepFriedBits . Cicada pride, baby!  I freaking love these guys, and this year two particularly big broods are supposed to take over local trees.  Brood 19 is a large horde of 13-year cicadas, and Brood 13 is a similarly large band of 17-year cicadas, and they're BOTH supposed to be hatching this year.  Periodical cicadas look like this, with a dark body and red eyes.  I've never seen one in real life. Brood 19 and Brood 13 will be joined by our usual annual cicadas, with which I am VERY familiar.  These...I think these tie with pra

Another one for the peanuts

Image
Yep, that's "peanuts" with a lowercase P.  I love Peanuts too, but today is Peanut Butter Cookie Day.  I don't have a bow with a peanut butter cookie on it, but I've got the one with the peanut on it!  Etsy shop is HandmadebyRileyRose . Goodness, how delicious!  Eating goober peas!  LOL, I've probably mentioned before that Daddy was a historian, and sometimes he'd play cassette tapes of Civil War-era songs.  Mama hated it, but I...I actually liked it.  "Eatin' Goober Peas" was one of my favorites because it was about a subject I could relate to.  Goober peas are peanuts, of course, and towards the end of the Civil War they were pretty much all residents of the south had to eat.  I like peanuts, but I think that after a week of 'em I'd get kinda sick of it.  My poor brother-in-law would be up a creek! Peanuts also factored heavily into a book that Mama read to us when we were kids.  The book was entitled Br'er Rabbit and his Friend

A bit early for football

Image
Today is Joe Montana's birthday.  He's sixty-eight like Uncle Man-Child and Uncle From St. Louis.  My dad liked Joe Montana a lot when Joe was in his youth, so why not wear my Chiefs bow today? Football season is MONTHS away, but since when have I let that stop me? Interestingly, Joe Montana only spent one year with the Chiefs, and he was on the injured list much of the time.  For most of his NFL tenure Montana played for the 49ers, a team that I can take or leave.  I don't pay much attention to San Francisco unless they have an earthquake or a riot.  Anyway, Joe Montana's birthday is today, so happy birthday, Mr. Montana! Pigskin pride, RagingMoon1987

NATIONAL DOLL DAY!!!

Image
Fantastic!!!  This is MY holiday, hands down.  Now...do I wear my American Girl bow, or one of my Barbie bows?  Decisions, decisions... Despite my best efforts I could not find a Cabbage Patch Kid-themed bow.  I could find bows FOR the Kids, but no themed bow for the fat girl who owns almost thirty Kids.  I did find a bow with the Bratz on it, but it was kinda ugly so I didn't get it either.  The Bratz are divisive; even my friends on the doll blog are divided on them, but I associate them with good times.   And now I go to a funeral.  Funzies...not. Love, RagingMoon1987

Time for doughnuts again!

Image
It's National Doughnut Day again, and do I love doughnuts! Mama and I picked a bad time to go on a diet, LOL.  If I personally don't lose some of this weight I'm gonna be in a wheelchair before I'm forty and I don't want that.  I want to celebrate my fortieth birthday with fireworks and balloons, not with a wheelchair.  No hate meant towards those who use a wheelchair, of course; I just don't want to use one unless I genuinely cannot move. But I still glutted myself on doughnuts this morning! Love, RagingMoon1987

D-Day

Image
Usually I don't wear my patriotic stuff until after June 14th, but it was either do this or declare the day a crap shoot day, and I've already got one of those for next week.   I could wad a shotgun with what I know about Operation Overlord, but I know it was an important part of World War II.  And the Allies ended up winning WWII, LOL.  That said, Grandpa said that when he fought in Germany during the war he knew of nothing but kindness from the civilians.  On Sundays the GIs would pool their powdered milk rations together and make ice cream, and the German children loved that.  The poor things, they were simply victims of their government, just as we Americans are today.   Love, RagingMoon1987

Warm air rises

Image
"The warm air rises.  Clouds form.  Storms develop."  So went a tornado documentary's heavily simplified explanation of thunderstorm development.  Seriously, the narrator said that, and this was a documentary produced by the Weather Channel.  Luckily for some folks, warm air does rise, and if one's got the right equipment one can fly.  Today is Hot Air Balloon Day.  Etsy shop this time is SassySouthernCharm10 . I'm deathly afraid of heights so y'all won't catch me dead on a hot air balloon.  But I do love to look!  They come in all shapes and colors, and a lot of hot air balloon festivals do these things called balloon glows or night glows .  The balloons are held on the ground, but their burners are fired up and they inflate, and since it's night the envelope of the balloon glows.  I love things that glow, so I'd love to attend a night glow. I guess I could expound on the dangers of hot air balloons in the wrong hands (Luxor, anyone?), but I end t

Who cut the cheese?

Image
National Cheese Day.  I don't have a bow with just cheese, but I have the next best thing!  Etsy shop is HeavenSentBowtique . I love me some mac and cheese...as long as it's not too mooshy.  Sometimes folks cook the noodles to death and they're just...mooshy.  But I can deal with mooshy noodles if the flavor is good, like it is at our local KFC.  My favorite mac and cheese has some kind of meat in it, something like chicken or bacon. Now cheese in general...I would say I'm an enthusiast, but I don't sit around eating cheese, nor have I tasted a lot of the cheeses that cheese enthusiasts do indulge in, so I'll just say that I like cheese and be done with it.  I like it melted on chicken or on my hamburgers, I like the phony stuff that goes on soft pretzels, and more than just about anything I love beer cheese dip.  I haven't had that in a long time, and just thinking about it gets my mouth watering. Love and cheese, RagingMoon1987

It's not easy being green

Image
It's Oscar the Grouch Day, and I can't for the life of me find a hair bow with him on it!  As I've established in the past, I'm quite fond of Oscar the Grouch.  No time like today to wear green. Mama found socks and T-shirts with Oscar the Grouch on them, but neither she nor I have been able to locate a hair bow with him on it.  I know I could custom order one, but for some reason I really hate that.  And as insane as this week has been, I've needed the green grouchpuss by my side. Green, grouchy love, RagingMoon1987
