The Bow Belle

Today is a more serious one, PTSD Awareness Day.  The awareness color is teal, but this is as close as I could get. As I've established in the past my maternal grandfather fought in WWII and saw things he'd never forget.  Understandably he came back from the war a little shell-shocked, though not anywhere near as badly as some folks.  He did admit that fresh out of the war he wasn't well, and had it not been for Grandma his life might not have gone as positive as it did.  Nonetheless Grandpa lived well and functioned, but he was afraid of fireworks and sudden noises for the rest of his life.  Like all men who worked behind enemy lines he saw plenty of horrible things, and those things tended to haunt him as well.  He had comrades who came back from the war way worse off than he was, but if asked he'd be the first one to admit that he had a little "shell-shock," the term for PTSD back then. Of course one doesn't have to experience a war to have post-traumat...

So far every day this week has either begun or ended with a big FML moment.  Yesterday was the worst so far, so I'm hoping maybe a unicorn will offer me some luck. Yeah, I figure a unicorn appearing in my life is about as likely as the perfect man appearing, but it doesn't stop the bow from being cute.  And with the good Lord on my side I don't need unicorns anyway. The first workday in October is when I start trotting out the creepy bows, regardless of what day it falls on.  Some of my bows are legit creepy (see here ), and then some are just fun, like this one. BOO!  LOL, flip sequins aren't all the rage like they were a few years ago, but every so often I do still find a bow that has them.  This one can be orange or black or both, and I usually choose both because it reminds me of tigers.  My mama's high school mascot was a tiger, so that drawn-out association makes me think of her.  My mama loved being a Clearwater Tiger , by the way; her family moved from Piedmont after she graduated, so she's the only member of my immediate family who did NOT graduate from Malden High School.  In a sea of Greenwave alumni, she's the lone Tiger and she loves it.  Mama's side of the family moved back to Malden in...1971, I think it was, but she still calls Piedmont "home." Today's bow is one that I forgot I had.  For shame! It's a lovely shade of blue, and the flipsides of the sequins are purple. Either way it matches my new scarf.  Very typical of a JoJo Bow; JoJo herself once said that her own bows got more sparkly as time passed, and in a way, so do mine.  Sometimes my jobs are simpler , and sometimes they're over the top ...and heavy!  Either way they suit me! I once eschewed these unicorn face bows as tacky, but here's another one! In addition to being a unicorn, this one is tie-dyed...sort of.  It's got a gradient of soft colors that makes me think of tie-dyed stuff.  The pink flower in the center even matches one of my new spring blouses.   That's it for the week!  Kinda fitting that I'd wear a rainbow-colored bow on a rainy day. I don't get to do this too often since I like to match or contrast my bows with my shirts, but today I happen to have one that goes with everything.   There's a healthy dose of apricot in there like I like, but there's also just about every other color one could want.  Since these are flip sequins, I can turn them all over and have a silver bow if I want... ...but I've got several silver bows, so I usually just leave the colored sides facing up.  Some of the sequins inevitably flip over when I shove the thing into my hair anyway, so it's all good.  By the way, I try to treat this bow (and my other sequined bows) with a gentle hand, as I don't want the thread holding those sparkly little goodies in place to break.  That can be a problem with sequined items, be they hair bows or those pillows that used to be popular or what have you.  If you've got a hair bow enthusiast in your family, you may want to remind them not to be rough with sequins. It's a bit early in the year yet to be talking about mermaids...I guess.  I've just always associated mermaids with summertime, particularly since my sister and I used to pretend we were mermaids when we got in the kiddie pool.  Either way my bow today looks a little mermaid-ish.  It's one of those that looks like a JoJo bow but is not, thus being what I like to calla faux JoJo.  I've got a few like this that I bought from Wal-Mart, and while they're not brand-name they're just as good. The finish on this bow reminds me of fish scales.  The scales themselves are rigid and clear, and the fish's bright skin is visible underneath.  Same sorta thing here; the bow itself is colored, and the sequins are shiny and clear.  The sequins flip, by the way, though the sequins are clear in this case and the "flip" function is kinda pointless.  They do look nice, though.
