Curse of the Bambino

I haven't worn the baseball bow this season, so here's our old friend from kraftyelves.
For the record, today is Babe Ruth Day.  Being a Cardinals fan I'm more into Stan Musial and Ozzie Smith, but I won't knock the Bambino.  Well, maybe I will, since the scoundrel couldn't keep his pants on.  I don't harbor a boatload of respect for folks who cheat on their spouses/boyfriends/girlfriends.

Baseball can be a superstitious sport, and one of those superstitions related to Mr. Man-Whore Ruth.  The two that I can think of are the Curse of the Bambino (bestowed on the Red Sox by fans of the man-whore) and the Curse of the Billy Goat (placed on the Cubs by a local tavern owner).  Both the Curse of the Bambino and the Curse of the Billy Goat have since been broken.  The Sox broke their curse in 2004...to my beloved Cardinals, no less.  Their drought...actually began a year before the supposed begin of the curse, in 1919.  Since then they've won one other World Series...again, over the Cardinals.  That second one was a fun World Series, though!  Malden, Missouri and Malden, Massachusetts had a bet:  if the Sox won (which they did), my Malden had to send their Malden a mess of local peaches.  I forget what their Malden had to send if the Cardinals won, but it was another foodstuff and it was equally delicious.  I also remember the Red Sox coach writing an open letter praising the denizens of St. Louis for their kindness and graciousness during and after the ball games.  That made a lot of Missourians feel good, and this particular Missourian holds a soft spot for the Red Sox now because of it.

As for the Curse of the Billy Goat, the Cubs finally won a World Series in 2016.  It was well-deserved, I must admit; both Chicago and Cleveland wanted the title desperately, and that series went the full seven games.  Chicago trailed three games to one at one point, but they rallied and ultimately pulled the win off.  A 108-year drought...killecrankie, that's a long time to go without winning a World Series.  Being a Cardinals fan means I have an obligation to tease Cubs fans, but those fans are some of the most devoted I've ever seen.  Wrigley Field is always packed, winning season or losing, and Chicago loves their Cubbies.  I applaud that.  It should be noted, by the way, that the Curse of the Billy Goat began in 1945, but the Cubs hadn't won a World Series since 1908.  Seems to me that they've ALWAYS been underdogs, but that's probably part of the reason why their fans love 'em all the more.  People like underdogs.

Love,
