Baseball!!!

Yep, baseball.  My dad, who loved word play, jokingly called it "basic ball."  The season opens today!  Batter up!
Today's bow is made from the skin of a baseball.  Baseball skin hair bows can be found all over Etsy, but my particular bow came from kraftyelves.  It can come in red (CARDINAL NATION, BABY!!!) or in blue if you're...dare I say it...a Cubs fan.  LOL, just kidding!  I don't root for the Cubs, but I don't hate them either, and I do love how devout their fans are!  The Cubs went a long time without winning a World Series, and yet their fans stuck by them and were eventually rewarded for their diligence.  But aaaaanyway, this particular shop sells bows in red and in blue, so if you're a fan of the Colorado Rockies you're outta luck!  Or at least I've never seen one of these baseball skin bows in purple.  Some shops will change colors if you ask them very, very nicely, so never say never.  And if you know someone who plays softball, softball skin bows can be found too.  They're usually neon yellow like the actual softballs are.  Duh, LOL.  If the ball itself is neon yellow then the bow made from the skin is going to be neon yellow too!  I'm real bright, y'all.  Anyway, young female athletes have to tie their hair back during play, and more often than not if they go the ponytail route they wear a bow or a scrunchie of some stripe.  Thus a softball bow would look cute on the softball diamond...provided it's not too heavy.  My baseball bow is not heavy, but some of my other bows are, and if it's one thing you DON'T want to wear during athletics it's a heavy hair dec.

Right, back to baseball.  The Cardinals are at home today, and they'll be playing the Toronto Blue Jays.  According to KSDK, this is only the third time in the past thirteen years that the Cardinals have played their opener at home.  The Kansas City Royals, Missouri's redheaded stepchild team, will also be playing at home against the Minnesota Twins.  I hope both STL and KC do well.  And now, it's time for trivia.  Since one team is in the American League and the other is in the National League the two teams often play each other, and they were playing each other on May 22nd, 2011, an infamous date if one lives in or close to Joplin.  I always thought it was a heckuva note that while Missouri's two teams were duking it out, another Missouri city was getting eviscerated by an EF5 tornado.  Later that year the Cardinals and the Royals dedicated their regularly-scheduled three-game series to the people of Joplin and offered ways for fans to donate and aid in the rebuilding.  The Cards won the World Series that year, by the way.

Sigh...baseball hasn't been the same since my dad died (I was seventeen when he passed).  Despite my quip on St. Pat's about him threatening to destroy my Beanie Babies, we had a close relationship.  He taught me the rules of baseball, American football, NASCAR, and ice hockey, and while we watched a game or a race we'd have these long, marathon conversations about TV or current events or God, anything I might have been curious about.  Then if something really exciting happened with the game we'd whoop like idiots and high-five.  Or we'd groan and facepalm if something really bad happened, usually if the opposing team scored or if an ump or referee made a bad call, or if Kevin Harvick hit the wall at Talladega.  It was wonderful...and then Daddy went to Heaven and that was the end of it.  I still don't watch baseball unless I have someone to watch it with.  But I do still love my Cardinals!

Go Cards,
