Sweet Georgia Brown
Yeah, yeah, I know "Sweet Georgia Brown" is the Harlem Globetrotters' anthem (I love the Globetrotters), but I tend to associate it with March Madness too. Go figure. Anyway, March 19th is a special day in my family. Uncle From St. Louis has a birthday that day (as does his twin, Uncle Man-Child), and for some reason Mama always has to bring up the swallows in that stupid song. In recent years the swallows HAVEN'T returned en masse to Capistrano, but I digress. This year March 19th is special for another reason, as it's the first day of March Madness. And when you're me, that means a hair bow. This is Bow #17, one of JoJo Siwa's bow club bows. It came with some other odds and ends that I'll admit to wearing.
I'm only now learning that these club bows have numbers on their little silver medallions. All JoJo Bows come with these silver thingies sewn on, but the club bows are numbered.
A cursory glance at Bow #8 revealed that it too is numbered.
Club Box #17 also came with shoe pom-poms and a bejeweled brooch that is shaped like a rainbow-hued Converse shoe. I often wear the shoe with one of my Chessie System pins, as I am today. I noted on my doll blog that eventually Chessie and Chuck will be joined by the flag of Israel and a weeping angel, but right now it's just Chessie, Midori, and Chuck.
University of Kentucky is our favorite basketball team, due to my sister's good experience with UK. Indeed, both Sister and her husband talk about how happy they were in Lexington. Brother-in-Law could talk to a telephone pole and get it to talk back, but Sister is more reserved...and more than a little acerbic at times. So if she was happy, then the place HAD to be awesome! So Mama and I root for UK, and we likely will be cheering on University of Arkansas too, since that's where Sister is now. Sister doesn't hate working for the Razorbacks, but no place they've lived has been like Lexington.
Ironically, Louisville is the team we cheered on before Sister went to Lexington. I say ironically because the Louisville Cardinals and the Kentucky Wildcats are kinda rivals due to being in the same state. 2013 was the year of four events that made me either smile and clap or gasp in horror...and get this: I had my back turned for two of 'em. One of those that I didn't witness was when Kevin Ware broke his leg. He played for the Cardinals at the time, and the Cardinals in turn were playing...who was it? <pauses to look it up> They were playing Duke in an Elite 8 game. Anyway, I'd gone into my room to do something with my dolls (because that's what I'm ALWAYS doing), and I heard Mama and Sister howl "OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!!" I knew something had gone down, thought "Well drat, I missed a dirty hit," and went about my rat-killing. When I came out of the room Sister groaned "Oh Sarah, you missed it! One of the Louisville players broke the hell outta his leg!" Indeed, Kevin Ware had broken the hell outta his leg, and it WASN'T due to a dirty hit. He just came down wrong, and...well, yeah. I dug the video up on YouTube later and dern near threw up. Here's the link if you've never seen it and fancy a good grossing out; the injury is very gruesome and I advise extreme viewer discretion. That was the end of Kevin Ware's season, but after some heavy-duty surgery he was back on the sidelines cheering his team on. Louisville won it all that year...and then ended up getting their title vacated. THAT was a fun little situation!
By the way, I find it ironic (yep, irony again) that March Madness starts halfway through March and then consumes all of April. Oh well, no biggie.
Joy to all,
