Strawberry season?
Actually I'm not expecting strawberries to be ripe anytime soon, but today is Strawberries and Cream Day. Etsy shop is TwinnsCraftSupplies.
I'm VERY fond of strawberries, so I have several bows that pay tribute to that. Not everyone does, and some folks are even allergic to them. But I could eat my weight in them. I particularly like strawberry rhubarb pie...and I haven't had it in years, LITERALLY!!! My paternal grandmother made it once, and we cut contact with her when I was eleven so I haven't had that pie since. As obnoxious as Grandma grew to be, she was a great cook. Daddy always said that the poor thing didn't really get obnoxious until she got too stove up in her back to garden. Gardening was her outlet, and she was darn good at it. Flowers and fruits in equal measure, she grew 'em 'til she couldn't, and then she drove Daddy darn near crazy. That was a rough time. But I won't forget the good times, and her strawberry rhubarb pie.
Today is special for another (somewhat trivial) reason. On this day in 1949 Cape Girardeau (eighty miles north of here) got hit by a violent tornado. The storm that spawned said tornado apparently formed in Arkansas and moved straight north...right over Malden. My grandmother and my grandfather were both downtown shopping that night, making last-minute preparations for their wedding, when the storm moved through. The storm made such a ruckus that people in the stores stepped outside to watch it. Grandpa saw Grandma on the opposite side of the street, and he bellered "Ya think we'll have the wedding???" It was that bad a storm WITHOUT the tornado! Twenty-two people died in Cape Girardeau that night, but Malden was spared and Grandma and Grandpa successfully tied the knot. Their wedding anniversary would've been tomorrow...ironically, also the anniversary of another deadly Missouri tornado.
How do y'all like that??? Begin with a brief chat about strawberries, end with yet another tornado monologue. I really need to get a new hobby.
Love and strawberries,
