Boogity, boogity, boogity!!!
For reasons I don't know, the third Friday in May is NASCAR Day. For that I'm wearing a fitting JoJo Bow. Specifically, Club Bow #23.
NASCAR was the sport of the hour when I was growing up. Daddy was a live-strong, die-hard Dale Earnhardt fan, while I cheered on Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick. February 18th, 2001 was a dark day indeed for the family, as that was the day Dale Earnhardt got killed. Head-on crashes into the walls of those tracks were always a big deal, and...well, that particular crash was a VERY big deal. The funny thing is, Earnhardt's crash looked tame compared to this 1995 smashup done by Ken Schrader, or the 1969 crash that involved Don MacTavish. Ken Schrader walked away from his crash smiling and without a scratch, while Don MacTavish died. I remember Schrader's accident well; I was watching TV with Daddy because a severe thunderstorm was moving in and I wanted to monitor it. Schrader caught too much air, and over he went. It scared the heck out of me.
Oh, Ken Schrader...if he didn't have bad luck he'd have had no luck at all, and I hated that because he seemed like a nice guy. He was collected during Dale Earnhardt's fatal accident, and many years later he recalled that he knew right away that Dale had died. He admitted that he didn't want to be the one to tell the world such terrible news. But I remember watching him during that interview and thinking "Something's not right." Schrader was usually upbeat during interviews regardless of the situation, and that time he was...very subdued. So I think Daddy and I both had an inkling as we headed off to evening church that night. Still, the news hit like a ton of bricks.
From that pit of despair came rookie Kevin Harvick, and he proved himself a worth successor in three short weeks. Harvick's victory was EXTREMELY narrow, and it was over another big name in NASCAR, the one and only Jeff Gordon. I cried. I won't lie, I cried over a goofy NASCAR race.
That's enuff memories, LOL. I admit that since Daddy died I haven't watched a single race. My sister has, though; her favorite drivers are Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano. I think Logano is a douche...but then aren't ALL athletes douches to some extent???
