Bridge Day

Bridge Day isn't really a holiday of sorts, but for West Virginians it's a big deal.  The event is a festival held on the third Saturday of October, and people come from far and wide to celebrate New River Gorge Bridge.  Oh my word, it's a beautiful area out there, and the bridge is pretty too.  I like arch bridges.
At one time New River Gorge Bridge was the world's longest single-span arch bridge, and it's still the longest one here in the U.S.  It's also the third highest bridge in the country, behind only Royal Gorge Bridge (located in Colorado), and Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (Arizona-Nevada border).  During Bridge Day road traffic is closed and pedestrians are allowed onto the bridge.  It is legal to BASE jump and rappel from the bridge during the festival, though you'd never catch me dead doing either one.  The more rural Tunney Hunsaker Bridge also sees a lot of foot traffic during the festival, for those who hate heights or the bigger crowds on the New River Gorge Bridge, and that's likely where you'll find me if I ever go to the festival.  Just look for a fat white brunette with a West Virginia Mountaineers hair bow and a small TARDIS around her neck, possibly carrying a dark-haired American Girl doll in a Shinedown shirt.

Yes, the bow.  It made its first appearance in April, but I waited until now to wear it.
I guess I insinuated this heavily above, but for some reason I've always nursed a fondness for the state of West Virginia.  The people are hard-working folks, and the mountains and forests are glorious.  In addition to participating in Bridge Day I've also wanted to snoop around Buffalo Creek to learn more about the 1972 dam break, and around Shinnston for info on the 1944 tornado.  As for the Mountaineers, they're not a team I hear a lot about, especially compared to juggernauts like Alabama's Crimson Tide (for football) or UCLA's Bruins (for basketball).  But both teams give it their all, just like all teams do.  Plus, I like how the letters interlock, and I love the colors.  I've always loved blue and yellow together.

Happy Bridge Day,
