A special birthday

Today would've been my dad's birthday.  He'd have been seventy-one.  For reasons I never thought to ask, Daddy loved elephants.  He collected elephants like I collect dolls and hair bows, and indeed the day that he died we'd been out shopping at antique stores (a pastime enjoyed by the whole family), and he'd added some new ones to his collection.  Said collection had a place of honor in our living room, and thus immediately after he died we had to explain it to a large number of church friends.  No, wait...I had to do the explaining, because Mama was fielding phone calls and my sister was hiding.  Explaining it was like a knife to the gut, because I knew Daddy would've been proud to know so many people showed interest in his elephants.  So in honor of Daddy's birthday I'm sporting a bow with an elephant.
It's actually a University of Alabama bow, LOL.  I do like the Crimson Tide, but even if I didn't I'd have been all over this bow like white on rice.  It's just too stinkin' cute.  This one is another Etsy find, from BecksBowtiqueTN.

One would think that elephants would be popular sports mascots, since they're big and powerful like lions and tigers and bears (oh my).  But so far I can only name two; there's the Alabama Crimson Tide, a college lot, and there's also the Oakland Athletics, a pro baseball team.  I really like their logo, as it shows a tickled-looking elephant balancing on a big baseball.  But sadly that's all I can name, unless there are other colleges and high schools out there who are proud pachyderms.  Elephants are indeed big and powerful like other animals that serve as mascots, but they're also fairly awkward-looking, and are usually depicted as such in media.  Usually.  Sometimes the elephant is depicted as...well, an elephant, like he was in the cartoon "Punch Trunk."  Unsurprisingly that cartoon was one of my dad's favorites.

Happy Birthday and Roll Tide,
