Immigrant song
<sings loudly> We come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs glow! Tomorrow is Robert Plant's birthday, and thus fresh from the same shop as the Beatle bow comes a Led Zeppelin bow. Gee whiz, could the Beatles and Zep be more different???
When it comes to British hard rock I've always been more of a Who fan than a Led Zeppelin fan, but I do love me some Zep...and besides that, I've yet to see a bow honoring the Who. Zep, the Beatles, and the Stones, yes, but so far I've not seen the Who. Whatever, I like Led Zeppelin too; my favorite Zep songs are "When the Levee Breaks" and "Over the Hills and Far Away." Regarding Robert Plant himself, I've always been fond of his work with Alison Krauss, particularly "Please Read the Letter." It always surprised me that Big Bad Robert with a voice like steel could mesh with the gossamer-voiced Krauss, but he did and I loved every second of Raising Sand. Also, don't tell Robert this, but I love his side project's cover of "Sea of Love." I read that Big Bad Rob did not want to be perceived as a crooner, and was thus not thrilled that "Sea of Love" charted at #3. Can't help it, I much prefer the Honeydrippers' version of the song, largely because of Plant's smoother vocals. "Rockin' at Midnight" is another solid tune, and one that is more like something Rob would sing.
Of course no hard rock band is worth their salt without a good controversy, and Zep had their hands full with "Stairway to Heaven." Personally, I never bought that story about the alleged subliminal messages, because one can hear anything they want if they play it bass ackwards at a particular speed. My dad used to say "If you seek out the devil, you'll find him." Furthermore, the Electric Light Orchestra was a lot more likely to backmask messages into their songs...and nine times out of ten those messages were either joking messages or just plain nonsense. Then there was the red snapper incident, a story that makes me cringe and giggle at the same time (story is rated X and the clarity of the details are questionable, but here's a link to the tale anyway...if you dare). So yeah, I love me some Led Zeppelin, and I plan on having some fun on YouTube tonight. Happy birthday, Mr. Plant. I wish I had your hair and a thimbleful of your skill at singing.
Rock on,
