Penguins!

Penguin Day, y'all!  And I don't know about y'all, but I love me some penguins!  Etsy shop is Tutu2CuteShop.
When I was a little kid I wanted more than anything to be able to fly, and I did everything I could to learn how.  Of course I was NOT successful, and I greatly sympathized with the birds in my kiddie books that also did not fly.  Ostrich, emu, kiwi, and of course, penguin.  It wasn't until later that I learned that penguins CAN fly.  When they're underwater, their swimming looks exactly like flying, and as far as I'm concerned it is legit flying.  It surprised me how penguins are so awkward on land, but in the water they're like fish.  Doesn't hurt that they're cute as all getout.
Those are emperor penguins.  I personally am quite fond of chinstraps.
The late, great Steve Irwin filmed one of his shows in Antarctica, and while he was there he encountered a large flock of chinstrap penguins.  Chinstraps are small penguins when fully grown, and in Antarctica the only humans around are scientists and documentarians who largely mean no harm to the animals there.  Thus when Steve approached the penguins and picked one up, the penguin didn't fight him.  Didn't even flap its wings!  Steve went on to explain that the penguins knew no fear of humans, thus why he could pick one up with no trouble.  Of course since he was Steve Irwin, he let the small bird go with no harm done.  Sigh...Steve was a little crazy, but he was a cool guy.  The world lost someone special when he died.

Let freedom ring

Yet another patriotic one.  This one came from Etsy, but I don't know what shop it was. This one is one of three that my mother got for me in one fell swoop.  The others are the jellybean bow from June 3rd and the flag bow from June 14th . Like them, this bow is a big one. International Sloth Day

Y'all know what that means! I think I've worn and shown this bow before (shop name is CherylsBowtasticBows ), but it's one of my favorites because SLOTHS, that's why!  I don't think I ever showed y'all my earrings, though. Those also came from Etsy (shop name is JMDesignsbyUS ), and they're made of wood.  JMDesigns is located in Sedalia, so usually when I order from them I get my item(s) toot sweet.  I never have been to Sedalia, by the way.  They seem to be a tornado magnet, having been hit in 1952, 1973, 1977, and 1980, so maybe I'd best NOT go.  The tornado in 1952 hit the Missouri State Fair, by the way.  Normally it's a bad thing for a tornado to hit during the night, but in that case it was a very good thing, as the fairgrounds were fairly empty.  Indeed, the only fatality in the 1952 storm was in a mobile home, not on the fairgrounds.  But enuff of that; this is supposed to be about sloths, not tornadoes!  If you've read my doll blog t...

National Watermelon Day

It's certainly a fine day for watermelon! This one came out of the Wrong Box, and I'm very glad it did or I wouldn't have had a watermelon bow for today...or at least not one that y'all haven't seen.  That would've been unacceptable since I'm fond of watermelon, especially the little ones with the dark rind, the so-called "black diamonds."  One year some bright yellow ones grew at Grandpa's farm, and those were what we had.  And I mean they were yellow!  On the outside they were normally colored, but once Daddy cut them open they were a lovely golden yellow inside.  That was one of the best watermelons I ever tasted, and the only one that I ever ate straight from the rind.  Y'all know how in cartoons and books people are usually depicted as eating watermelon from the rind ?  We didn't usually do that.  Mama would cut the rind open, chunk up the interior, and serve it to us that way.  The local colony of alley cats got the rind, which th...
