Three cheers for the badger

Image
It's Hufflepuff Pride Day!  My beloved Hufflepuff bow gets another spin.  Etsy shop is LittleLondonBowtique . It turns out that Hufflepuffs are often experts in Herbology, which is fitting for me because I want to start studying herbalism...and foraging too, since a lot of the stuff I'm after grows in the wild.  I'll discuss that further in another post; for now I'll just say that I'm thankful for dandelions and henbit.  I wonder if there's any medicinal uses for kudzu???  If there is I'll let y'all know! And if you're not a Hufflepuff, your days are coming.  I think tomorrow is...<pauses to look it up>...tomorrow is for Slytherin! Hufflepuff pride, RagingMoon1987

Do you like green eggs and ham?

Image
Seeing as it's just ham and eggs with food coloring, yeah, I can stomach it!   Hmmm...or maybe it's NOT green food coloring! This one is a special bow, as a local lady named Claudia Gage King made it.  Miss Claudia is manager of the local Dollar Tree and sells hair bows as a side gig.  Her coworkers also tell me that she's got a website, though I haven't yet found it.  When I DO find it I'll update with a link.  She's got some cute stuff in multiple sizes, and she told me that she was open to commissions. As to Dr. Seuss...killecrankie, I think everyone loves Dr. Seuss, no matter how old they are.  Green Eggs and Ham is one of those classics that remains popular in the current day.  Indeed, I forget how many copies of the book my library has lost over the years.  Jerks will check 'em out and just...not bring 'em back, fines be damned.  As for me, I love how Sam-I-Am lets his unnamed friend's opening lines roll off his back.  UNNAME...

Silly old bear!

Today is Winnie the Pooh Day.  While Pooh Bear is not as big a deal in the U.S. as he is in England, I still enjoy him. Etsy shop is VALERIAASBOWTIQUE .  It's got Pooh, Eeyore (who is smiling for a change), Tigger, and Piglet.  Tigger was the one I related with the most when I was a kid, since I was hyper and loved to run, jump, swing, play ball, whatever.  Rabbit drove me nuts because he was so anal-retentive.  But as I got older I grew to understand Rabbit more. Yeah, I know that's fanmade, but I can still relate.  Seriously, sometimes I want to punch morning people in the throat, and I can picture Rabbit not being a morning person.   Did any of y'all grow up with Winnie-the-Pooh books? Love, RagingMoon1987

One of my favorite fabrics

Image
And my favorite color, LOL.  Etsy shop is SpaceCatSupplyCo . I associate corduroy with comfort, warmth, and childhood.  When I was a little kid we had a brown corduroy recliner, and more often than not that's where Mama and I sat after dinner.  Our bellies would be full and usually I'd be fresh from a bath, I'd have a lapful of kiddie books, and Mama would hold me and read to me.  Our cat would sometimes add to the homey atmosphere by ricocheting off the back of the chair during a spell of zoomies.  One night I counted five times that she did that, LOL.  We were on the couch that night, but when we were sitting in that chair and the cat bounced off it, it sure made a heckuva noise! Some of my kiddie clothes were also made of corduroy.  I had a little vest that was made of the fabric, and it always chagrined me that I could only wear it during winter.  The vest was dark green, much darker than the bow I've got now, and I could zip it up "all by mys...

A book I like

Image
Today is Read a Child a Book You Like Day, and since I've yet to share my Pete the Cat bow, here it is. Unfortunately, Malden Library doesn't have my favorite Pete the Cat book, Pete the Cat and the Bad Banana .  There's a scene in that book that spoofs Pepto-Bismol, a medicine that my whole family often needed and kinda, sorta, REALLY HATED. Truth be told, if I were gonna pick a book to read to a kid, it would be one of my childhood favorites like The Laughing Dragon , The Funny Little Woman , or The Monkey and the Crocodile .  My library doesn't have The Laughing Dragon , but it does have the other two and I reread them on a regular basis.  The Monkey and the Crocodile is a riot. Do any of y'all have a childhood favorite book?  Discuss. Peace out, RagingMoon1987

House of the...badger???

Image
I think I've established this in the past, but I identify as a Hufflepuff.  This one came from LittleLondonBowtique . Truth be told, I don't really feel like I'd have fit in ANYWHERE at Hogwarts!  Gryffindor requires bravery and I'm a sniveling coward.  Ravenclaw requires intelligence, and I'm...well, I'm not stupid, but I'm not a genius either.  I'm not ruthless enuff to belong to Slytherin.  So by default I sorted myself into Hufflepuff.  It's all in good fun anyway, LOL. I think I said this in my post about the Marauder's Map bow that my sister is an out-and-proud Slytherin.  I can remember us discussing the houses at Hogwarts as teenagers, and she said, casually as all get-out, "I'm a Slytherin.  I'm not the least bit ashamed of it."  I remember laughing and saying "Yeah, that fits you!"  It was hilarious.  My mom, as always, shook her head and said "I have no idea what you two are talking about."  LOL, ...

Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?

Image
I see a goof in a hair bow looking at me.  Etsy shop is RoxysBowtiqueShop . Today is Eric Carle's birthday.  Eric Carle was a children's author and illustrator, and to my surprise he's only been deceased a couple'a years.  His best-known work is  The Very Hungry Caterpillar , but he also illustrated a number of other kids' books, including one of my old favorites, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?   I was six when I first heard Brown Bear, Brown Bear , and while it was a bit under me (I was already a proficient reader by then) I loved the rhythmic rhyming and the colors in the book.  Things didn't get really trippy until the blue horse was introduced!  Up until then the animals had been more or less normally colored, even though ducks are only yellow if they're babies ...or rubber . My bow sports the last pages of the book, where a group of children are asked what they see.  The children proceed to name everything in the book, ending it wit...

The living can be hurt

Image
Sounds like something the Doctor would've said to one of his crazy friends, but it's actually a quote from one of my dad's favorite movies. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is probably the last flick I'd picture being immortalized as a hair bow, but the proprietors of DollfaceDesigns tends to think out of the box.  For the uninitiated, the titular Mrs. Muir is Lucy Muir, a young British widow who moves into a large house by the sea, accompanied by her young daughter and her housekeeper.  Unbeknownst to Lucy, the house is haunted by the ghost of a seafarer, and...well, they fall in love and the story goes from there.  My father, six-foot-two and three hundred pounds, was not one to cry easily (indeed, I saw him cry exactly once), but when The Ghost and Mrs. Muir came on TV one day he warned me "Better sit in front of me, Sarah.  This movie often makes me cry."  So I did, and so we enjoyed the flick.  Indeed, it has its emotional moments, as well as a few moments t...

Like a boomerang I need a repeat

Image
This is something new to the blog:  a repeat!  Today we see the return of the Cat in the Hat and his mischievous little cronies.  I last wore this bow on March 24th . Mama got me a new Dr. Seuss-themed shirt, hence the bow.  I do have another Dr. Seuss bow somewhere, but it's buried under...well, under more bows! Oh well, I've been on a Dr. Seuss kick lately anyway.  A couple'a nights ago I dug up a childhood favorite and watched it.  Most of my friends associate the Grinch with Christmas, but our green frenemy also had a program for Halloween entitled Halloween is Grinch Night .  The original title was just It's Grinch Night , but the premise was the same:  a shift in the weather got the animals around Whoville all riled up, and presumably the noise they make gets the Grinch ticked off.  So he takes his wrath out on the denizens of Whoville.  More at eleven.  Anyway, I had that on VHS growing up and my sister and I watched it a lot...

Thank You for Libraries Day

Image
According to this blog , Thank You for Libraries Day is a thing, though I doubt very many people celebrate it.  So today I'm trotting out the Very Hungry Caterpillar. As usual, I've also got ear baubles.  These were birthday gifts from a very sweet patron. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of those classics, and yet I'd never read it until yesterday!  The book has the bright illustrations one would expect from Eric Carle, and it tells a simple story about a caterpillar who tries to whet his huge appetite on various fruits.  The book teaches basic counting skills, the days of the week, and the basics of a butterfly's life cycle.  My old friend humor makes an appearance when the caterpillar inevitably eats too much, but all ends well.  The story reminds me of my sister, the family's butterfly lover .  We ALL loved butterflies, but she loved 'em a lot. If y'all have a library in the vicinity, give 'em a visit, and if the librarian isn't a jerk tell ...

April Fools Day

I don't have anything too humorous to wear, so I went with a horror theme instead. That, kids, is Pennywise the clown, better known as It.  I have two of these, both from BaanBows on...guess where?  Etsy!  Told y'all that most of my best bows come from Etsy!  So do some of my best earrings.  Dig these. These came from EyesOnYouHandmade , and they're just one of the available murder weapons.  There are also meat cleavers, big heavy wrenches, a few different types of saw, and my choice of weapon, a claw hammer.  If you're not into horror the shop has tamer stuff.  Now for the record, I have no intention of killing anyone or anything deliberately (except maybe the red wasp that I saw out my window this morning), but if it comes to defending myself I'll most likely utilize either a claw hammer or a pair of scissors like what I'm currently wearing.  I doubt either one would work against Pennywise, though.  I remember HOW Bev killed him in th...

The Marauder's Map

Image
Story time.  When I was a freshman in high school I had a friend who turned out not to be so great a friend after all.  We hung out together because our mothers were both teachers and because we both claimed to be holier than thou.  And because we were holier than thou, we were above the witchcraft and wizardry that was Harry Potter.  Not too long after she'd led me to believe the books were satanic, she spread a rumor that I was suicidal and that was the end of that "friendship."  My opinions on everything changed, but by that time I was too disgusted with life to even try the books I'd deemed evil, so I didn't read the Harry Potter series until I was about twenty-nine or so. Now the painful time that was my freshman year is far behind me, though the memories do still sting.  I learned some valuable lessons and figured out who my real friends were, so it wasn't all bad.  I've stuck to my guns regarding my religious faith, but I also remembered that bo...

These things are good things

Image
When I was a little girl Dr. Seuss was king.  I was fond of Horton Hatches the Egg , while my sister was obsessed with The Foot Book .  My bow today unfortunately doesn't have either of those themes, but it does have Thing One and Thing Two on it.  That too ties in with my childhood, since Mama used to call my sister and me Thing One and Thing Two. I have another Dr. Seuss bow somewhere, but it's pretty little so I rarely wear it.  This one is another gift from my mama, so I don't know where it came from, but it matches my new shirt so I won't complain.  Since Thing One and Thing Two both wear red jumpsuits, I could also wear this with red.  Versatility is a good thing, with the economy being what it is.  Mama and I have elected to be veeeeeeeery careful with our money, so new hair bows are probably going to become a rarer thing.  No biggie, because I've got two big boxes full already. Fun thing about Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss G...

A quick ode to Little Golden Books

Image
My work week begins today, Tuesday.  Today I decided to deck my 'do with this bow, from AMWBowtique.  Etsy shut down AMW for some weird reason, but the Failbook page is alive and well.  This bow has a Little Golden Book theme. The one, the only, the Saggy Baggy Elephant!  Oh, when my sister and I were children Little Golden Books were our lives.  We learned about God, about the solar system, about some of the more popular cat breeds, about make-believe worlds where animals communicated with humans and with each other.  One of my favorites was one of the classics, entitled The Saggy Baggy Elephant .  The book was about a young elephant who called himself Sooki.  Sooki didn't know exactly what he was but was happy with who he was...until a smart-aleck parrot made fun of his large ears and his large trunk and especially his wrinkly skin.  "You are baggy and saggy.  They should call you Saggy-Baggy!" the parrot jeered.  Poor Sooki sub...
